There is a moment in the history of technology when what seemed like the future suddenly becomes the present. A turning point. The 2014 edition of e-privacy, held on October 17th and 18th in Cagliari, was exactly that: a lucid, visionary wake-up call about what we were about to become. And ISGroup, even back then, was there. The title of the conference was clear and prophetic: “The Internet is of Things.” A statement of fact, more than a provocation. Two days of reflections, technical interventions, and legal scenarios regarding what the Internet of Things (IoT) was preparing right before our eyes: a hyper-connected world where data is no longer requested, but taken. A world where washing machines, refrigerators, scales, and apps become silent witnesses—and sometimes accomplices—to a dossier written without consent.

ISGroup chose to be there, and not just for visibility. But to reiterate that security is also—and above all—an ethical issue. That technology only makes sense if it serves to protect, not to surveil. That the culture of privacy is not a nostalgia for the past, but an urgency of the present.

The event’s program alternated between academic, legal, and technical sessions. There was talk of drones and control, apps and profiling, digital forensics, and cloud privacy. But above all, there was talk of people: unaware users, observed citizens, tracked consumers. And the need to stop, reflect, and react.
