Phishing

Phishing

Phishing is a cyber scam that uses emails seemingly from reliable sources to trick users into entering their credentials on a fake website. This type of attack relies on the trust the user has in the entity appearing to send the email, often a bank or a service with which the user already has a relationship.

How Does Phishing Work?

  1. Creation of the Fraudulent Email: Attackers create an email that appears to come from a legitimate source, such as a bank or an online service. The email often contains logos, language, and formatting that faithfully imitate those of the legitimate entity.
  2. Sending the Email: This email is then sent to a large number of users in the hope that some of them will fall for it. Attackers often use social engineering techniques to make the email more convincing and urgent, such as threats of account closure or requests for urgent verification.
  3. Website Spoofing: The email contains a link that leads to a website created specifically to look identical to the official one of the entity. This fake website is designed to deceive the user into believing they are on the legitimate site.
  4. Credential Harvesting: When the user enters their login credentials on the fake site, they are sent directly to the attackers. With this information, attackers can access the user’s accounts and commit fraud or steal personal information.

How to Protect Yourself from Phishing

  • Email Verification: Do not click on links in suspicious emails. Always verify the sender’s email address and look for any signs of forgery.
  • Direct Website Access: Always access websites by manually typing the address into the browser bar rather than clicking on links in emails.
  • Use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second verification factor in addition to the password.
  • Software Updates: Keep your antivirus software and operating systems updated to protect yourself from the latest threats.
  • Education and Awareness: Educate yourself and your family members about the risks of phishing and how to recognize suspicious emails.

Phishing is a serious threat but one that is recognizable and preventable. Being aware of the techniques used by attackers and adopting security measures can protect your personal and financial information from these deceptive scams.
