The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is a set of rules (protocol) used in conjunction with the Internet Protocol (IP) to send data in the form of message units between computers over the Internet. While the IP protocol handles the actual delivery of data, TCP is responsible for keeping track of the individual units of data (called packets) into which a message is divided for efficient routing across the Internet.
TCP allows two hosts to establish a connection and exchange streams of data. One of the main features of TCP is the guarantee of data delivery, ensuring that packets are delivered in the exact order in which they were sent. This is crucial for maintaining the integrity and reliability of the communication, as each packet is numbered and the recipient must acknowledge the receipt of each packet. If a packet is not acknowledged, the sender retransmits it.
The process of establishing a connection between two hosts via TCP occurs through a mechanism called the “three-way handshake.” This process consists of three steps:
- The client sends a SYN (synchronize) segment to the server to initiate the connection.
- The server responds with a SYN-ACK (synchronize-acknowledge) segment to accept the connection and synchronize.
- The client responds with an ACK (acknowledge) segment to confirm the established connection.
Once the connection is established, data can be transferred bidirectionally, ensuring that both hosts can send and receive data simultaneously. TCP uses flow control and congestion control mechanisms to optimize network usage and prevent overloading.
In summary, the Transmission Control Protocol is fundamental for reliable and orderly data communication over the Internet. Its ability to establish secure connections and ensure the delivery of packets in the correct order makes it an essential component of modern network architecture.
