There was a time when surveillance technologies seemed like the stuff of dystopian novels. Then came the time when they became a daily reality. Since 2002, e-privacy has represented the meeting point for those who refuse to resign themselves to this scenario. And ISGroup, once again, has chosen to be there. With conviction. On October 16 and 17, 2015, in the evocative setting of the Mediateca del Mediterraneo in Cagliari, the 18th edition of e-privacy was held. The theme: Computer Captors and civil society: a possible coexistence? A question as uncomfortable as it is urgent. Because if it is true that captors – the so-called “State Trojans” – are investigative tools, it is equally true that they can become tools of abuse.

Among the most significant speeches were those by Claudio Guarnieri on cyber-police and cyber-warfare, by Andrea Ghirardini on the drift of institutional Trojans, and by the Secretary General of the Privacy Guarantor, Giuseppe Busia, who drew a clear line between legitimacy and generalized surveillance. On the legal front, the reflections of Elena Bassoli and Riccardo Abeti stand out, as they denounced the “one-way transparency” imposed on workers, students, and citizens.

And then Saturday, with the round table on the regulation of captors, international comparisons, and a clear message from experts, jurists, and institutional representatives: without democratic control, technology transforms from a resource into a threat.
