There was a moment in the evolution of technology when the question was no longer “what can we do?”, but “where will all this lead us?”. That question returned forcefully in the 2018 edition of e-privacy, titled with a word dense and loaded with implications: Singularity.

On June 8th and 9th, 2018, in the historic setting of the Salaborsa Library in Bologna, the 23rd edition of the e-privacy conference took place. An event that addressed, without compromise, the new faces of surveillance, the risks of artificial intelligence, the increasingly pervasive role of the Internet of Things, and the dark dynamics of fake news and information bubbles.

Why did ISGroup choose to support e-privacy again in 2018?

Because we believe that every era has its point of no return. And that, at that threshold, we need clear-headed, critical voices capable of transforming alarm into awareness and fear into concrete action.

The program was intense: from Diego Giorio’s visionary provocation on privacy in 2118, to technical interventions on GDPR, data ownership, and the paradoxes of anonymization. Marco Calamari and the Winston Smith Project once again led the proceedings with rigor and passion, guiding a diverse audience of lawyers, activists, technologists, and ordinary digital citizens.

Among the most significant moments was the Big Brother Awards Italy 2018 ceremony, organized by the Hermes Center: an opportunity to remember – even with irony – those who have “excelled” in undermining our privacy.
