There are appointments that mark time not with the punctuality of a calendar, but with the urgency of awareness. One of these is e-privacy, which in May 2020, despite the pandemic, found a way to stay connected through the web: its 27th edition took place entirely online, confirming a truth as simple as it is inescapable — privacy does not go into quarantine.

ISGroup chose to be there. Again this year. As a supporter, as an attentive listener, but above all as a voice that refuses to resign itself to the idea of a future where technology observes more than it protects.

The title of the conference was clear and unsettling: “Algorithms, automatisms, and predictions”. A theme that spans predictive justice and social scoring, emergency remote teaching, and drone surveillance. The risk? Transforming tools created to simplify life into devices that judge it, file it, and anticipate it without understanding it.

For ISGroup, choosing to support e-privacy means taking a stand. In an era where artificial intelligence can influence sentences, diagnoses, and political decisions, we have a duty — as a company and as citizens — to put the human element back at the center. Two days of presentations. Two afternoons packed with urgent reflections. From Nicola Gargano and Enrica Priolo on the digitalization of justice in the time of COVID, to Giorgio Pedrazzi on remote teaching and its risks to student privacy. And further, Alessandro Del Ninno on the regulatory implications of health data, and Rebecca Berto on the evidentiary legitimacy of automated technologies.

But the point was not just “what can be done” with data. It was — and is — who decides, why they do it, and with what transparency.

There is no innovation without ethics. For ISGroup, this is the heart of the matter. Every day, we work on the edge between what is technically possible and what is socially acceptable. Sponsoring e-privacy is not marketing. It is a mission.
